Origin:
California native below 4500 ft. found on Channel Islands, coast ranges, Sacramento Valley, and the Sierra Nevada foothills south into Baja California (Bornstein, 2005).
Landscape Value:
Showy native bunch grass in the winter and spring with green foliage, and inflorescences that turn from green to purple (Bornstein, 2005). Also likeable because of its drought tolerant nature.

They are adaptable in their soil type preferences, and require little supplemental watering if any. They grow in the winter and dry up in the summer. If the dry look of the grass in the summer months is undesirable in can be pruned back (Bornstein, 2005).
